An interview with the owner, Tammy Downing

What made you decide to open this business?

My husband and I had taken a trip to Yellowstone Park. The guided tour of the region was so interesting, it sparked my interest in the field and led me to want to provide that same wonderful experience to others in different parts of the country. I then attended the International Tour Management Institute (aka ITMI) in San Francisco, where I learned how to keep guests engaged, public speaking, how to manage the business and develop logistical and contingency plans for my guests.

What was it like when you first started?

When I first started, I gave (and still do periodically) tours of Washington D.C., New York City, Boston and Philadelphia and was often subcontracted by other companies. After a while, I found that New Hampshire offered many touring opportunities. I was pleasantly surprised that 120 guests signed up for my first ghost tour, so I actually had to split the one tour into two! It was great!

What has surprised you most when owning a business?

With this specific business, I enjoy researching the history of and creating different tours, while learning about other businesses and what they offer to customers.

What would your customers say they love most about your business?

Guests love that I support small businesses by including them in my tours. I am introducing guests to these businesses with the hope that they would become customers, bringing family and friends and spreading the word about the services and products provided to them.

Guests always comment on learning something new about a business, service or region. They also love that my tours are fun, wacky and entertaining!! Also, children LOVE my tours, just as much as the adults!

Do you have any exciting plans for the future that you want customers to know about?

I already offer Brew Tours in the towns of Derry and Londonderry. I am now developing similar tours in Nashua, greater Concord and Manchester!

Do you have a business idol and why?

Eugene Ebner, Tour Director in Yellowstone National Park. He not only provided a wonderful tour of the region with history and knowledge, he took the time to answer tour participant's questions. He truly inspired me and gave me advice on how to become a tour director.

Where are some favorite places that you like to go on your tours?

I love the history of Manchester's Millyard; Downtown Concord has something for everyone and Boston's many stops that are included in my Ghost Tour.

What do you love most about #Concordnh?

My favorite thing about Concord is it's charm. Just walking downtown and poking into the various shops and restaurants is an adventure!
